Dynatrap DT1000 Review by Brian Baird "Fan Dad" (Richmond, VA)

A few bullet points on this trap:

- Catches lots of flying bugs - flies, moths, and of course mosquitoes. So, there is collateral damage to other species. Those with lots of guilt, be prepared
- I empty mine every month or so; the basket holds quite a few carcasses (hundreds)
- Everyone says it should be semi-protected from the weather; I hung mine under the eave of a detached garage, with a tree above that . . . I think a shady / darker area with some cover is probably adequate; it shouldn't get exposed to blowing rain in storms, basically
- I got three years out of my first one, then the motor failed (well, it still turns, but at about 3 RPM) and the lights also failed. That's $30 per year, plus bulbs. Be ready to replace it eventually and factor that in
- I replaced bulbs twice per year. These UV bulbs are funny - although they will continue to make light that we can see, they will lose effectiveness for insects. Anyone who has ever been on the industrial side of this has probably heard about this already; I work in a hospital where obviously bugs are not a good thing, and our maintenance guys replace bulbs regularly even though they look the same as when they were installed
- Bring it in during the winter when there are no active bugs, but put it back out as soon as they could appear so you can hit them while they're trying to increase numbers
- You can't put it on a timer or unplug it at night; it must run continuously because the fan must continue to force the bugs downward until they die. It's a slow, horrible desiccating death for the bugs, but I really hate mosquitoes so that doesn't bother me
- I saw a review stating it works without bulbs; I'm intrigued but I'm skeptical as well. The light generates the CO2 from the titanium, so having no light would seem to remove all attraction . . . but what the heck, I'll try it. If no mosquitoes (or not many) after a week, the bulbs will go back in

Dynatrap DT1000 Review by sn

I tried it for 2 weeks, only got a dozen or so mosquitoes.. I put it in the right location... and all that. Disappointed I spent the money on it. We'll try the mosquito Magnet next.

Dynatrap DT1000 Review by dicerotops "LP" (Northern VA, USA)

Location: Northern Virginia
Area: Half acre in a heavily wooded lake community
Types of mosquitoes: Asian Tiger Mosquito (there may be others, but those are the ones that attack me the most)
Mosquito problem: Very bad - backyard unusable without lots of bug spray or long sleeves. My cat seemed to always have at least one on her. No one could stand outside without having several mosquitoes attempting to bite! I was always apologizing to guests, and swatting at those on me. There would be 5 waiting for me when I stepped out of the car.

What I used:
Dynatrap DT1000 (for 1/2 acre)
Flowtron MA-1000-6 Octenol Mosquito Attractant Cartridges (the cartridge has sticky tape so it can be stuck beside the lights inside the trap)

Results:
Shocking. After the first night, there was a pile of dead mosquitoes. After the second night, there was a new pile of dead mosquitoes. After walking around the yard on the second day, I saw one, maybe two mosquitoes. I was not bit, and my cat didn't have any on her.

Cons:
You need to put the trap under a cover to protect it from rain. The bugs are caught alive, and you will catch a lot of moths. I feel bad for the moths flying around in the trap, and usually try to let them go. In the process I let a couple mosquitoes go. Fortunately, most of the mosquitoes die pretty quickly, and there aren't many to escape. Also - be sure to set the trap away from the house. At night there are lots of bugs around it!

Why I picked Dynatrap:
I will admit that I was extremely skeptical of this device. As described above, I had a horrible mosquito problem! My area is a mosquito farm with all the damp areas, woods, and weeds. I didn't think anything would work, but I had to try something. Poisons were out since it could contaminate my ground well water. I liked the science behind the mosquito magnet, and other propane traps. However, at $300 plus $50 for a propane tank, plus propane refills, it was way too costly. That left the Dynatrap. On the advice of another review, I ordered the attractants. I think that this makes all the difference - as I don't see how the trap really produces carbon dioxide (maybe I'm wrong).

Overall:
I am still in disbelief at how well the trap worked. I didn't think it would. I keep walking outside, expecting to be swarmed. The trap is in the back, and both the back and the front are still for the most part mosquito free. I'm now recommending it to my friends. Get the attractant, follow the directions, and you may get some pretty amazing results too!
